Stop of treatment for mental health patients branded 'scandal' by MS

Today, Siân Gwenllian, Member of the Senedd for Arfon has raised the issue of mental health patients not receiving treatment in the Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board area. She branded the situation a ‘scandal’, and claimed it was ‘completely unacceptable that doctors were told in BCUHB to discharge mental health patients.’

The Plaid Cymru politician noted that she could understand the pressures that the current pandemic has put on the health service and that there might be some delay in treatment, but went on to say that the decision to discharge vulnerable people ‘clearly shouldn’t have happened.’

She has today called the Welsh Government to review the situation, and review how many were discharged and ensure that their care can resume urgently. She’s also called for assurance of sustained additional investment in mental health care.’

This comes following Plaid Cymru Shadow Health Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth MS saying that problems were building up with mental illnesses going untreated or undiagnosed because of the current crisis and that the Welsh Government should be looking at ways to “step up support” for those with mental health problems rather than being in a situation where Doctors were being told to discharge them.
