Politicians’ Christmas appeal raises more than £4,500 for local food projects

Food projects from across the constituency will benefit from the money

Arfon politicians Siân Gwenllian and Hywel Williams launched their 2022 Christmas appeal to raise funds for eight food projects within their constituency.

Funds raised from this year's Plaid Cymru Arfon Christmas Appeal are being donated to Arfon Foodbank, Caernarfon, Coed Mawr Foodbank, Bwyd i Bawb Bangor Fareshare, Yr Orsaf’s Food Scheme, Penygroes, Porthi Dre, Caernarfon, Pantri Pesda, Bethesda, Cwm-y-glo and Llanrug Food Scheme and Bangor Cathedral Foodbank.

Today, the MS and MP for the Arfon constituency have announced that they smashed their original target to raise £4,765, to be divided between the food projects.

Siân Gwenllian MS reacted:

“This is a bittersweet occasion, as we shouldn’t have to be in the situation where we have 8 different food projects set up fairly recently within one constituency alone.

“Despite that, I have an immense feeling of pride that the people of Arfon have been so generous in their donations.

“We are overwhelmed to have exceeded our initial target, especially as the money raised will be shared equally with food projects covering all corners of the constituency.

“This continues to be a winter of hardship and desperation for so many families, and I’m glad that we can do our part by contributing this money.

“As I have already expressed, the existence of these projects are an indictment of years of austerity, and a broken political system that lets the people of our communities down.

“But I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to all people that contributed to our appeal.”

Hywel Williams MP, Arfon’s representative in Westminster added:

"We are seeing more and more families having to turn to local food banks for help due to the rise in the cost of living.

"Soaring food and fuel costs are affecting us all, but for families on the very lowest incomes this crisis means so much more.

"Foodbanks and community food share schemes across Arfon are a lifeline for those struggling to get by.

"But we are very lucky that here in Arfon, there are so many compassionate people who responded so generously to our Christmas Appeal.

"A huge thank you to everyone who donated. Your contributions are going to help make so many people’s lives that much better."
