Bangor market “perfect opportunity for last minute Christmas shopping”

Tens of local producers have set up shop at Bangor market

A weekly market has returned to Bangor after an 18-month break because of Covid. The market’s return was the results of negotiations between Bangor City Council and The Artisan Market Company.

The market was visited by Siân Gwenllian MS and Hywel Williams MP who represents the area in the Senedd and in Westminster, and they called the market a “perfect opportunity for last minute Christmas shopping.”

Among stalls at this year’s market are fresh meats, wooden crafts, toys, plants, artisan fudge, candles, home-baked cakes, handmade home decor and jewellery, vintage fashion clothing, and handmade cards and gifts.

Siân Gwenllian, pictured above with Arfon MP Hywel Williams, on a visit to Bangor market on Friday, has welcomed the return of the market after “a long two years.”

“It’s been a long two years, but Bangor Market is a perfect way to socialise safely in the open air and support small independent businesses whilst doing so.” Said Siân Gwenllian said.

“It’s encouraging to see local people venture with small businesses. There are many benefits of doing so. Recent studies show that independent small businesses employ more people per unit of sales, and keep more employees during lulls in the economy.

“As I outlined earlier this year, Bangor High Street, has its fair share of challenges.

“Out-of-town stores, Covid, and people’s need to tighten their purse strings has negatively impacted high streets up and down Wales, but Bangor  has faced its distinctive problems, including the fire and subsequent closure of the High Street.

“But now is not the time to give up on Bangor High Street.”

Hywel Williams MP added;

“There are endless economic, ecological and community benefits of shopping local, and whilst the market is here we have no excuse. It’s a perfect opportunity for last minute Christmas shopping!”

Bangor Market is on the High Street in the centre of the city on Fridays from 9 - 4.30pm.
