Siân Gwenllian - Arfon AM
Main interests and achievements
Sian Gwenllian was elected to the National Assembly in 2016. She represents the constituency of Arfon for Plaid Cymru.
Following the election Sian was appointed as Plaid Cymru’s speaker on Local Government, the Welsh language, Equality and Planning.
Sian was educated at Ysgol Friars in Bangor and at Aberystwyth and Cardiff universities.
Following the loss of her husband she brought up her children alone.
She was a school governor for 15 years and was chair of Ysgol Syr Huw Owen, Caernarfon’r board of governors. She is active with community projects and is a campaigner for equality and the Welsh language.
Her interests outside politics include theatre, art, walking, yoga, the Welsh music scene, football and rugby.
Sian previously worked as a journalist with the BBC and HTV before becoming a freelance journalist. More recently, she worked as communications officer for Gwynedd Council and for the company Golwg.
Between 2008 and 2016 Sian served as a councillor on Gwynedd Council, representing Y Felinheli. Between 2010 and 2012 she was responsible for the authority’s finance portfolio and between 2012 and 2014 she was Cabinet member for education, and Deputy Leader of the Council. In 2014 Sian was appointed Small Business Champion, responsible for the promotion of the sector and of the county’s economy. Sian was chair of the Arfon Constituency Committee.
